We are booked on coastal express cruise Bergen to Bergen early June and not sure whether to plan some more fjord exploration before or after the cruise. Mid June will be busier. But we may be better prepared to target our destinations after our cruise.
Not planning head to Oslo (ie no Bergen railway leg) but will include Flåm railroad and Fjord crossings starting from Bergen.
Would also like to add a second Fjord to this mini-trip but not sure if we can break our trip overnight easily, if we’re going with a formal ‘tour’.
Grateful for any comments or experience!
Train stops at Voss, so meaningful to add Hardangerfjord area. Easiest is with a rental car driving this scenic route.
You will also see a lot of more fjords on the coastal route, most scenic are Geirangerfjord (summer sailing plan only) and Trollfjord.
Time-wise I do not see any piority.
Are you planning to rent a car?
If you're going to take the Flamsbana, it will be very convenient to take the Naeroyfjord ferry from Flam to Gudvangen. The Naeroyfjord is extremely scenic. You can then return to Flam by bus (cheaper), take the ferry round trip (don't think many folks do that; sailings are infrequent), or you can take the scenic bus from Gudvangen up to Voss, where you can pick up a train back to Bergen.
Whether you'll have a burning desire to see more fjords after the cruise, I cannot say with certainty. I took Hurtigruten from Bergen to Alesund and from Alesund to Trondheim, but most of my time on the ship was overnight (not counting the detour into the beautiful Geirangerfjord), so I didn't get all that good a look at the coastal views. My impression was that it was not as spectacular as actually sailing in one of the narrow fjords.
It would be prudent to pre-book the Flamsbana (vy.no, can book as single trip Bergen-Myrdal-Flam if you want to) and the Naeroyfjord ferry (NorwaysBest.com). The Flamsbana does sell out sometimes.
That depends a lot on where the "coastal express cruise" takes you and what you'll see from it. But adding Hardangerfjorden seems like a good idea if you want a second fjord.
