Need help planning Scandanavian trip

We are planning to go to Scandanavia next year. Really need any suggestions on: (1) best time to go (2) is it easy to rent a car and drive around or should we plan on trains, planes, etc. (3) suggested itinerary for 3 weeks including St. Petersburg? (4) what is best way to see Fjords, day trip, etc.
We are retired, so time is not an issue. We've traveled through Europe by car, Eastern Europe by train, so we're prepared for whatever.

Consider taking some overnight ferries. My husband and I spent three weeks in Scandinavia last year. We depended heavily on the RS Best of Scandinavia book. It really helps with learning about the ferry system and determining the best itinerary so getting that book should be your first step.

We flew into Helsinki, spent three nights there, then took a ferry to Tallinn and spent two nights there, then took an overnight ferry to Stockholm. Once in Stockholm, we joined the two week RS Best of Scandinavia tour. The tour was by bus with several ferries as well, including an overnight ferry between Copenhagen and Oslo. It was an amazing three weeks.
