I got my ticket from Oslo to Myrdal months in advance. I wasn't able to buy the ticket from Myrdal to Flam at that time. Now my Norway in a nutshell trip is approaching and the Norway train website says all the trains are sold out from Myrdal to Flam. Rick's book says not to worry, that standing on the train is an option. Can anyone confirm this is true? I figure a taxi is another option. We need to get to Flam to take the boat to Balestrand at 15:30.
That seems unlikely, especially if you see the same results on all the depatures. My guess is that they just don't have their new reservation system worked out online, yet. The reservation is for a train departure but not a seat assignment. Try booking at the train station when you arrive in Oslo.
It's not on all departures, only on the afternoon departures of the day we are traveling. Tickets are available for other days or same day but early or late.
You can also try calling Norwegian Rail at 011-47-81-50-08-88 then option 9. It might take a few tries, during Norwegian business hours.
First, a taxi is not an option. Myrdal is a very small station that does not even have a ticket office (it does have a cafe). But no taxi service nor any other services. There are roads to Flam, I do not know if they connect to Myrdal.
We stayed at a hotel just down from Myrdal a few weeks ago, the first stop on the Flam Railroad. From there we traveled to Flam twice and had no problem getting a seat on either trip from Myrdal to Flam. In addition, on our initial trip to the area from Oslo we had no problem getting a seat without a ticket.
You could stand if the crowd was too large. I doubt you will have a problem getting on the train.
Thanks for the information. We got to Oslo today and were able to buy tickets (there were 22 left) for the 13:27 train from Mydral to Flam. It means sitting around Mydral for an hour but at least the train will be less crowded.
