Mushroom Foraging and Berry Picking

We didn't make our trip to Norway in 2022 as we had hoped, so we are going to give it another try the end of August/beginning of September. We are a family of 4 adults and our focus will be mostly between Oslo and Bergen, but we have time to stretch a bit beyond that for something amazing. We will be spending some time in the Hallingdal valley to visit family heritage sites. To make the trip a little more exciting for our young adult kids, I am looking to add in some more unique experiences. Do any of you have any recommendations on a mushroom foraging and/or berry picking experience? We would have no idea what to do without a guide.

Other adventures that are being considered for them are a glacier hike, an outing on a crab or fishing boat with a meal, a sauna and a swim, and the ski jump zip line in Oslo. Any other input is appreciated.

Thank you.

Kayaking in a fjord (e. g. Nærøyfjord) or ziplining (in Flåm or Bergen). In some ports rib boat rides are offered. Hiking, e. g. Dronningstien.

Alternative to ski jump zip line in Oslo is Ski Simulator Holmenkollen.

If they are fans of history events that became TV series the Rjukan resistance story may be of interest (see Saboteur's Trail).

If they are extreme sports geeks they wil miss the Norseman at August 2 this year; starting with a jump at 5 a. m. into the very cold Hardangrfjord. Same disciplines and length as Ironman on Hawaii but much harder conditions.

It's really not complicated to pick berries.

  1. Find a forest.
  2. Go in to the forest.
  3. Look for berries.
  4. When you see berries, pick them.

You don't need a guide for that. The same is true for mushrooms, but it requires a bit more knowledge as there are delicious mushrooms in the forest, but also those that can kill you.

I can't speak to foraging.
The fjord swim, sauna thing is fun. We did it a couple of times. There's a nice place in Bergen with showers, sauna, heated pool and diving tower. Nordnes Sjøbad
Skip the Ice Bar in Bergen.
Our glacier hike in Fjaerland was disappointing. We saw the glacier; but there was not much to hike on.
RIB boat was fun.
We went to Lillehammer to see actual ski jumping. Didn't try it though. The bobsled run was closed. I'm told that in the winter you can ride it in a rubber bumper car.
