I am planning on visiting next summer and have been paying attention to the current weather.
It seems by looking at the weather apps over the past month, every day is a rainy day. However, I wonder if it is more nuanced. During the summer are you likely to get a little bit of everything in one day? Seems like a place where the weather moves fast, raining one minute then sunny the next.
What was your experience?
Unfortunately, the weather in Norway can be very unpredictable. I spent 5 days in the Lofoten's several years ago in july, and it was sunny everyday but one, where it was gray and overcast. I spent 3 weeks in Scandinavia last summer in late June and July and had very mixed weather: several days of sun, one gray and windy and one overcast day in Stockholm, pouring down rain the day I took the train to Copenhagen, then 2 days of warm sunshine. 2 days of sun on Aero, then sunny but cool in Gothenburg for 2 days. Rained the day I went to Oslo, then sunny the next 2 days. Rainy for both days in Jotenheimen National Park, 1 day of rain and 1 day of sun in Bergen, 2 days of sun and one overcast day in Ålesund, 1 day of rain and 1 day of sun in Geiranger and sunny in Andalseness, 1 day of sun and 1 day of rain in Trondheim. Sunny the day I flew back to Oslo.
Even Norway’s high-season of July and August can bring completely unpredictable weather. After flying into Alesund in late August, we had one of the sunniest, warmest days of all in Norway. A couple days later it was cold, windy and rainy. The weather changes rapidly in Norway and that may be even more so in Lofoten, as it’s located inside the Arctic Circle.
Thanks guys. I guess I was trying to figure out whether their unpredictable weather manifests all in one day, aside from on a day-to-day basis.
The last time I was in Ireland I hiked in Connemara,. The beginning was dry, half way up I got pelted with rain and some of the strongest winds I’ve encountered, then it was bright and sunny at the top, before getting drenched on the way down. All in the span of 2 hours! This is kind of what I was envisioning in Lofoten.
Will have to just cross my fingers and go. As a hiker, this I consider one of the ultimate destinations.
