Is there any reason not to start in the south and travel north, terminating in Tromso? Most folks seem to go the other direction, but the travel/transit looks simpler for us if we start in the south.

It depends very much on what you're looking for and what time of the year. But in general, no. However, for an autumn trip you really want to start in the north.
We’d be going in late July / early August. Just for scenery and hiking.
In that case, it doesn't matter at all in my opinion.
