Lead time required for booking trains and ferries?

Hello all!

We are planning a trip to Norway this July, and wondering how far in advance we can/should book ferries and trains. The current plan is to start in Bergen, then take a ferry to Balestrand (actually staying at the Dragsvik Fjordhotell) for 2 nights. Then, on to Flåm for 2 nights, and finally taking the Flamsbana / Bergen Line back to Bergen.

One website where I went to book the train from Flam to Bergen said that July was too far in the future to book the train.

Do the trains/ferries tend to get sold out? When is the ideal time to book these? Many thanks in advance!

Hei Jeff, it's hard to say what may or may not sell out. But from my experience the ferry to Balestrand will most likely not sell out. However, you can buy the ticket here: Norled

The Flåmsbane and train to Bergen can sell out in the summer, so that one I would buy in advance. You are also likely to get a better price if you order early. Usually the tickets are available 90-120 days before. I'd recommend you to get the train ticket here: Vy

I hope that helped!

I think in Rick's book he literally states which tickets you need to worry about getting ahead of time, and which not. I know it was useful to me in my planning for my trip last summer.
