In praise of museum guards and surveillance cameras!

Posting in the Norway section because of where it happened, but could apply anywhere. Mind you, all caused by my carelessness. Anyway, here's the story. I was in Oslo and decided to visit the MUNCH, Astrup Fearnley, and the National Museum in one day. All went well until I was ready to leave the last on my list, the National Museum. I carry a camera bag with my gear and my passport with me everywhere I go. Usually, I take my camera and one lens and lock up the rest in the cloakrooms. No problem, I am used to it. I read and follow the instructions and routinely take a photo of the locker. So, a couple of hours later, tired but happy, I approach the wall of lockers, pull out my phone, and horror! I forgot to take the photo this time! I was left staring at hundreds of identical shapes with no idea which one had my possessions. After randomly trying a few doors, I approached the nearest guard with my dilemma. He contacted security, they looked at CC TV footage, and after a couple of false attempts, I had my precious things. Moral of the story: don't forget to take that photo, and this is one time I am glad I had been recorded. All hail (working) surveillance camera and lovely museum guards!

Similar thing happened to me but in Japan. I had placed my day bag in the lockers at Himeji station (I was going back to Kyoto from Hiroshima). After exploring for few hours and returning to the station, I could not for the life of me find the locker section (there were a few). After walking in circles, I went to a security officer who took me to the information office. Luckily, the system included a key which had a number on it. Officer looked at the map/system and walked me to the locker. I had passed by it and forgot to make a turn. Phew. Got my things just in time for my train to Kyoto.
