Ideas in and around Bergen

Greetings. I am addressing the RS Forum for my wife for this post. I will be joining my wife and a couple friends in Flam in late May. We will all be arriving at different times and from different countries for this trip. My wife will land at Bergen airport on Thursday evening and will stay the night in Bergen. She will be by herself until late Saturday, when her friend arrives. The only set itinerary we have thus far is a house rental for 5 nights in Flam, booked for that Monday, which is the likely day my friend and I arrive.

My wife is struggling with what she (and eventually, her friend) should do Friday through Sunday before the rest of the group arrives. Is there enough to do in and around Bergen to set up base for 3 nights? If so, what day trips/excursions would you recommend? Or, are there any other places you would recommend she stay for that weekend? She would consider renting a car, if needed, but she would likely be more comfortable relying on public transportation. She is interested in the lovely scenery, hiking, biking and she appreciates fine cuisine. Any ideas are appreciated.

In the summer of 2015, we spent 3 nights in Bergen and 3 nights in Oslo. We stayed at Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret, with an excellent location between the old merchants' houses and the Royal Castle. We could walk everywhere from that location and the breakfast was very good.

We had a rental car with us and for a day-trip we drove all the way to Flam, but the long way, along the Fjords. From Flam we took the Flam Railway up to Myrdal and back down, the landscape was very pretty. Back in Flam we went on a Fjord Safari with https://www.fjordsafari.com/, where we went on a speed boat through the Fjords, that was really incredible speeding past all the sheer cliffs and really getting up close, my best memory from the trip.

We spent at least 1.5 days actually exploring Bergen itself, between the castle, old merchants' quarter, harbourfront, museums, funicular, and general exploring there was a good deal to see. We ate at two very good restaurants - Bryggeloftet & Stuene (very traditional Norwegian fare, order the Bergensk fiskesuppe, the signature dish of Bergen) and Dr. Wiesener (neighbourhood hangout with great local seafood).

Bergen is a excellent city to visit. Lots of areas to explore in a few days. Good city to walk around. She and her friend won't be bored. Google......sites to see in Bergen and you will find plenty.

My partner and I will be in Bergen in May for 3 days (4 nights) and we are planning a day trip by bus out to Odda then on the Hardangerford tourist route. We have used Skyss bus website to plan this. In Bergen we will ride the funicular, visit the Hanseatic museum and the Kobe 3 art gallery to see the Munch paintings. We are staying in an apartment near the train station and plan to walk everywhere in Bergen.

You can reach the Grieg house by light rail. On the same route is the Borgund Stave Church. Both are a bit of an uphill walk from the rail stop. There’s a lovely bakery by the stave church light rail stop. I wish I remembered the name but if your wife sees a bakery I would advise going in.
