we'd like to do the standard nutshell [Aurlands- & Naeroy-fjords Flam–Gudvangen], then go from Gudvangen to Balestrand to stay 2 nights, then cruise from Balestrand to Bergen. ... or some modification of that, but seeing those sections of fjords. what is the best strategic way to do that?
We'll be starting in Oslo, & probably taking the train from Bergen back to Oslo.
also, which is better... the end of august or mid-september? or doesn't that matter so much?

Ahhh...I'm jealous. We did a similar path (but in reverse) in 2011, although I'm not sure we got to Gudvangen. We spent a few nights in Bergen, two nights in Balestrand as well, a night in Aurlandsvangen, and then way up in Solvorn for a few nights. We had a car, though, which made much of this easier. But...the ferries are pretty good to the other places here. Check out Rome2Rio's site:

The easy way is SIN (Sognefjorden in a nutshell) Oslo-Bergen and NIN Bergen-Oslo.
If you end your NIN (Oslo- Bergen) in Gudvangen around 6pm, there is a bus 8pm to Sogndal (bus stop 1/3 mile from the pier in Gudvangen). Most days there is a connection (bus) from Sogndal to Balestrand.

Thanks Wendy & JZ, we will check that out! :-) does anyone know when the public ferries & bus schedules are curtailed, or how to find out the date? some sites say mid sept, others end sept. We won't have a car, strictly public transport. we could go up there near the end of august, OR towards mid sept. We don't want to be in the tourist crunch in august... when in august does it calm down? but we don't want to not have options if we go more towards mid sept. Any input is appreciated. thanks again!!

after lots of research, I've found we can stay in Flam a few days, do a Flam–Gudvangen–Flam cruise, next day do a Flam–Borgund Church shuttle, then ferry from Flam–Balestrand, then the Balestrand–Bergen ferry. & found that sept. dates work fine!
