How to get from Myrdal-Flam-Voss-Bergen by train and boat/Ferry

Hi, We are planning to take the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal, but then I get a little confused as to best route and modes of travel between Myrdal-Bergen.
We want to include the Flam Railway, 2 nights in Voss or Flam (not just a singular night in each of those towns), and a couple of fjord cruises. We prefer train/ferry, a short bus ride in that route is ok.
Any tips on an efficient but relaxed itinerary would be helpful!

You are talking about the Norway in a Nutshell route. You can either purchase a complete package with the authorized tour company, FjordTours or you can purchase the components separately and DIY. Depending on your situation, you may save some $$ doing it yourself, but not always. If you are 67+ you can get senior fares on the Oslo-Myrdal and Voss-Bergen trains as well as the Gudvangen-Voss bus

If DIY:

  • Oslo-Myrdal-Flam rail booked as 1 ticket with vy.no
  • Fläm-Gudvangen ferry booked with Norways Best
  • Gudvangen-Voss bus purchase tickets from driver
  • Voss-Bergen rail booked with with vy.no

If staying in Flåm, book far in advance as lodging is limited and prices can be high. Choose your overnight based on what you plan to do in addition to the Nutshell. Most people would find 2 nights in Flåm or Voss to be 1 night too many.

The ferry from Flåm will take you through the Aurlandfjord and the very scenic Naerøyfjord.

If you're schedule allows, the bus to Stegastein Viewpoint from Flåm is a great compliment to the fjord cruise.

I would start your research by looking at the FjordTours website. Do a dummy booking to see how the trip flows seamlessly from one mode of transportation to the next. This will help you build your own tour if you decide to DIY the Nutshell. The site also gives you ideas of activities available along the route like organized hikes and kayaking.

In Flam, I can suggest the Fretheim hotel. A few minutes walk from both the train station and the ferry dock. They also have a great dinner buffet.

If you are going to Bergen, you could check out more fjord cruises from there.
