Should I reserve a ticket for my car for the ferry that goes from Kaupanger thru the Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen? I’ll be there at the end of August. If I should reserve in advance, how early/when should I buy the ticket?

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I recommend that you verify with the rental company that you can take your car on a ferry. Some don’t allow it.

I can't imagine a Norwegian car rental company not allowing you to bring your car on a ferry. But it is probably a good idea to check and not take my word for it.

Andrea and Badger, thanks for your comments. The “terms and conditions” posted online for my Hertz car rental reservation don’t mention anything about ferries. I’ll be driving from Oslo to Bergen via the fjords, using ferries that are an integral part of the highway system, so I can’t really avoid ferries - I’d rather not go looking for trouble by asking my car rental company anything about it.
