I’m looking for something relatively handy to train station and ferry dock and also charming. I’ve got the RS book with recs but would be grateful for any thoughts on those in book or others. Maybe public transportation so easy I don’t need to be close to train and ferry?

We have stayed at the Thon Hotel Astoria there 3x and t is very convenient to the train station as well as the general core of the city. We walked everywhere, no need for taxi etc, to give you an idea.

Public transportation is easy and there are bunch of tram lines all over the city, as well as a metro line that runs through the city centre. And if works on the honour system so as long as you have a ticket you just board the tram/train and continue where you're going. So it's very easy to get around the city and not too important to stay in the middle of it.
