Hiking down the Flam railway route

I want to follow Rick Steves recommendation about hiking part of the train route from Myrdal to Flam. When I buy the tickets to I have to buy Myrdal to Blomheller and Blomheller to Flam? Or can we just buy the ticket from Myrdal to Flam?

I very much agree with walking part way down. If you intend to do so then just buy a part line ticket- partly because it's cheaper and partly to ensure you are in the correct train car. The various local stations are not well used. Every time I've done that only certain train doors are opened as there seems to be a designated train car for local stations - most of which are flag (request) stops.
Having always walked uphill on the valley road I highly recommend walking downhill!
My hack, if joining a fully booked uphill train from Flam is to walk to Lunden or Hareina and join as an unbooked local. It hasn't failed me yet. From either of those stations it's more or less flat walking into Flam. Use Hareina station for Flam Church.

Forgive the hijack.
We are looking to book an excursion whilst in Flam. This involves a hike down from the end of the zip line at Kaardal to Blomheller Station.
Could anybody tell us the nature of this hike, we are both pensioners with typical pensioner knees :) but regularly enjoy a couple of kilometres walk around the lakes where we live in England. To know the type of terrain, inclines, etc would we need our walking shoes or just robust trainers would be a great help.
many thanks

@dee.hess - The walk is entirely on the sealed valley road, which has very, very little traffic- almost all local. So if you happen to meet a car (unlikely, but possible) it will be someone who knows how to drive on such a road and knows how to be thoughtful to pedestrians.

So any footwear will do. You are gradually descending, but not steeply so,

I'm thinking about doing that hike myself. Ballpark, how long is the hike from Myrdal to Flam.

From Myrdal to Flam it is around a 12 to 13 mile walk. However the first 1 1/2 mile from Flam to Vatnahalsen is NOT on the road (as there isn't one), it is on a path which is a bit more challenging.
The road from Flam starts (or ends?) at Vatnahalsen.
So the general advice (whether walking/cycling or using the zip line) is to use Vatnahalsen Railway Station as your start point.

From Vatnahalsen the road (which was originally the navvy road, to construct the railway) continues on to Finse about 22 miles away (a station on the Bergen to Oslo railway, mainly uphill) and then to Haugastol (a further 18 miles or so away downhill, another of the wayside stations on the main line).
In the other direction the route continues for 37 miles to Voss- as a navvy road there are several of the small railway stations on the route where the journey can be broken. All the way from Haugastol to Voss you would normally cycle it, not walk due to the distances involved.
