Hikes around Flam

In late May, I'm taking the early train from Oslo to Myrdal, then to Flam where I have lodging. Since I will have my luggage, I can't hike or bike from Mrydal to Flam. Once I'm in Flam, would you suggest hiking at least some of the way back to Myrdal (and then back to Flam), or are there some suggested hikes in the Flam area? Thanks, Dan

I would take the walk along the fjord to Otternes Bygdetun (an old farm which you can tour). We drove by it, but didn't stop since we had previously visited my husband's family farm near Lom (which was very interesting). The pictures of Otternes Bygdetun are very similar to what we saw. You will also have a better view of the fjord then from Flam. For other options, there are some waterfalls you could hike to. We drove up the road to Myrdal as far as the Flam Church, and there were a few hikers and bikers going up. The church was interesting to see, but the scenery probably won't be better than what you will have already seen from the train.

These are some options.

We spent 5 nights in Flam in late May. There are some good hikes. You can hike out of town center to Brekkefossen, which is a lovely waterfall. You will run into a lot of hikers (and sheep) on that hike. As the prior poster mentioned, the hike parallel to the fjord to Otternes Farm is an option. It is a little less than 3 miles on a hiking path (each way) overlooking the fjord. You then cross the road to head up to Otternes. While you are overlooking the scenic fjord most the way, car traffic on the adjacent road can be loud. The hike to Flam Church from Flam is also approximately 3 miles. The scenery isn’t as nice as the prior hikes mentioned, but the hike was more peaceful as it was alongside a river and the road had little car traffic and little to no people. Depending on your desires and fitness level, there are a lot of hiking options outside of Flam. I spent a day hiking in the Aurland area, which was away from the fjord but packed with waterfalls, climates (lush and arid), and more sheep. I found the All Trails app to have a wide assortment of trails. Make sure you download your maps as cell service outside of town was spotty.
