My daughter and I will be leaving Copenhagen early August 7th heading to Oslo after her Church choir tour of Denmark and Sweden ends. We fly home out of Bergen the morning of the 11th. I want to see the fjord areas and I'm looking for suggestions to get the most out of our time. What I thought would be easy planning is becoming hard. I've visited every area of Europe except Scandinavia and I just want to get the most out of the small window we have to see this area of the world. Thanks!!!
To add to my post: We are actually flying out of Oslo to return home, so perhaps I should travel from Copenhagen to Bergen instead of Oslo to start our fjordland journey, right? See why I need help ? :)
I would support the idea to fly to Bergen from CPH and travel from there back to Oslo. With 5 days you could do Bergen 1d, tour Bergen-Oslo 3d and Oslo 1d (focus on nature and landscape).
You can do that by organised public transport, also known as Norway in a Nutshell (NiN) or explore Norway by rental car but one-way rentals are expensive. On the other side by car you can explore Norway in your own pace and at places which are rarely visited by tourists using pubic transport. Some examples you can see in the scenic routes (look at Hardanger and / or Hardangervidda).
Optionally ou can drive southern of Hardangervidda, partially exploring Ryfylke, then via E134, scenic route between Rjukan and Skien and heading on to Oslo.
In Bergen and Oslo you will not need a rental car.
Thank you MarkK for taking the time to respond. I guess the NiN is probably the best way for me to go at this point. I need to look into how, or if, I can spread out our time on the NiN and stay over in some town along the way rather than do the whole thing in one day. I'd much rather spend the limited time we have in the fjord area than in the two cities.
Thanks again!
I have never done Norway in a Nutshell. But I have twice taken the boat from Bergen to Flam and the train from Flam to Oslo. Once I did it in a day. The other time, with my wife, we stopped and spent the night in Balestrand and stayed in classic old Kvikness hotel. The boat goes up Sognefyord. Recommended.
Thank you for the advice. Going from Bergen to Flam sounds like a great journey.
Once there, can I get a boat to tour the Naerofjord that same day or the next, if I stay the night in Flam or Balestrand?
My agenda so far-
August 8: Bergen to Flam. Once there, any thoughts?
August 9: Naerofjord? RIB boat tour? Again any thoughts from anyone?
August 10: Need to get to Oslo by night time for a flight home on the 11th. Can we book the NiN train/bus to go back from Flam to Oslo?
You basically book the regular train to get from Flam to Oslo. The last time I did it we got off the boat from Balestrand, walked into the ticket office, and bought our tickets. We ate lunch and got on the train to Myrdal. A fairly short wait in Myrdal for the train to Oslo.
Thanks. First time doing this and I don't want to screw anything up...
