Trying to figure out how to spend 5 days between Bergen and Oslo. We will fly into Bergen from US on 9/5, arriving around noon, and spend 2 nights there. We have 5 nights (9/7-9/11) to tour before going to Oslo on 9/12. Will take overnight ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen on 9/13.
Definitely want to cruise the Nærøyfjord and take the Flam railroad. We are open to renting a car in Bergen and returning it there, or in Oslo or Alesund. Could also travel by train/bus. Want to see the most scenic areas we can during this time. We don’t mind driving 5 hours per day if it’s scenic with stops. My friend can do walks, but not hikes. Checked out scenic drives, scenic trains and other recommendations from folks on this forum.
Considered flying from Bergen to Alesund to do Geringanger, Trollstigen and then train to Bergen.
Have also seen routes around Hardangerfjord by car and ferry.
Also considered routes that include driving to Flam/Aursland, taking snow route and other scenic drives to Oslo.
Totally confused. Please help.
how about this plan:
ferry Bergen to Balstrand
two nights in Balstrand, visiting the cider house plus the stave church in Vik
ferry Balstrand to Flam
Fjord tour via ferry/bus looping back to Flam
one night in Flam
train Flam to Mydral
train Mydral to Oslo
two nights in Oslo
that's our plan for late June, after much study
Thanks ChrisFD. We actually have 5 nights to spend after we leave Bergen and before getting to Oslo. Hope you enjoy your June trip!
Still working on itinerary, but this is one we are considering.
Sept 7 (Approx 4 hour driving including ferry)
- Rent car in Bergen (after spending 2 nights there) or at airport
- If from Bergen, take E16 to Trengeried then Rv7.
- Stop at Steinsdalfossen Waterfall.
- Ferry from Torvikbygd to Jondall
- Jondal to Eidfjord via Hardanger Bridge
- Stop at Norwegian Nater Center
- Visit Voringsfossen Waterfall
- Overnight in Eidfjord
Sept 8 (Approx 2 hrs drive time)
- Driverive through Mabodalen Valley via Rv7
- Take Flamsbana Railroad
-Cruise to Gudvangen; shuttle bac
- Drive to Stegastein Viewpoing if weather is good)
- Stay in Flam or Aurland
Note: One cruise in Flam leaves by 1. SHould I plan to take train and/or cruise after that? What time is lighting best?
Sept 9 (Driving time 3.5 hrs if we go via Laerdal Tunnel; 5 if we go via Aurlandsfjellet)
- Drive from Aurland/Flam via Laerdal Tunnel (unless weather was not good night before. If we have to go to Stegasteing this am, should we drive the Aurlandsfjellet? I understand that is is scenic, but would add 1 hr and 30 minutes)
- Continue on E16 toward Kaupanger and Lustrafjord, passing deep blue fjords and stops for photos of Hurungane mt range
- Take Sognefjellet Scenic Rd RV55 toward
- Overnight in Jotunheim Nation Park
9/10 (Driving time
- Time in Jotunheim (poasible boat ride, or short hike)
- Drive through Gudbrandsdalen Valley
- Overnight near Lillehamemer and visit Maihaugen Open Air Museum of Olympic Parkf?
9/11
- Drive to Kisefos Museum and Glassworks
-Overnigh Oslo
I would appreciate your thoughts. Not wedded to this itinerary. Want to experience highlights of the fjords and the mountain scenery, whether we do this by car, boat or train.
I originally wanted to go to Alesund and Geringerfjord, but felt like it might by too much given our time constraints.
Also considered not doing the Hardangerfjord and including another day along the Sognefjord and visiting the glacier.
Your thoughts about most scenic options? Thanks!
