Hardangerfjord or songnefjord in May

First time here, and hoping you can help a weary researcher. :)

We're planning a trip to Norway in mid-late May of this year. Key notables:
-Family of 3 with an 8 year old (so no hard core hiking on our itinerary)
-Flying in from REK to Bergen (arriving at 2:50 PM)
-Would like to head straight to the fjords that afternoon
-Have three nights to spend in Fjord country before returning to Bergen and then on to Lofoten
-Will have a rental car

Beyond taking in the scenery, the only thing I'd definitely like to see is a beautiful stave church.

We're looking for recommendations on a three night itinerary for either hardangerfjord or sognefjord.

Very rough idea.
First night at Hardangerfjord, e.g. Utne or Norheimsund. Easy driving with long daylights.
Explore Harangerfjord, e.g. parts of scenic route Hardanger.
Drive up to Gudvangen (do not forget Stalheimskleiva), enjoy Naeroyford ferry, explore Flam. Overnight in Myrkdalen.
Drive up street 13 to visit Hopperstad Stavkyrkje in Vikøyri. After that ferry to Balestrand and loop back via 55 and E39 to Bergen. If you have enough time you can do the loop via Gaularfjellet instead of 55 directly.
