My great-grandfather immigrated from Hammerfest. I would like to add a side trip from a typical Rick Steves itinerary. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

Best of Scandinavia ends in Bergen. From there you could fly to Hammerfest on Wideroe connecting at Tromso.
Or the Hurtigruten or Havila ships sail nightly arriving at 0505 after 4 nights at sea.
Then fly home via Tromso.
Tromso has flights all over Europe on various airlines.

If you have more time Hurtigruten and Havila ships sail up the Norwegian coast from Bergen, and Hammerfest is a port they stop very short. They offer port-to-port journeys and it works more like a maritime bus line than a cruise line. A great and beautiful experience.
I like Hammerfest although it is a longer one-way detour from E6 route to North. If you decide to drive car up there take care about the reindeers; they do not care for cars when they cross the streets (photo example from Google Maps).
