Hubby and I will be stopping in Oslo on our way back to Utah in May 2022 for about 3 days or so. I have found the Haddel Stave Church and am dying to go see it. Does anyone know of a very easy and inexpensive way to go see it?
TIA -
Kim
Take the bus or train to Notodden, and a local bus from there. There is a bus stop 200 m from the church.
I believe it's authentic, being dismantled & rebuilt piece-by-piece in
the park.
It is. It was moved to Oslo from Gol in the late 19th century.
I support Badgers recommendation.
If you prefer a rental car, driving is very conveniant in Norway. There are a lot of other attractions in that area.
Heddal stave church is a very remarkable building (one photo from my collection). Be aware to have a wide-angle lens with you if possible.
From my pre-trip research, I'm only aware of one stave church that is a recreation--the one in Bergen. The original one burned down and was rebuilt.
You Midwesterners should seriously add the one at rapid city, sd to your domestic list, based on the one at bergen
There is one in Gol that's a replica of the original one now in Oslo - so there are at least two replicas. I had not heard of the one in Rapid City, but knew there is one in Minot, ND. [PS - is this site wonky? I tried to reply to this yesterday but was not allowed. This happens fairly often & sometimes the site won't even come up or find my account].
Koldbrandstad is another recreated stave church.
MarkK,
Your photo is amazing of an amazing church! Thanks for sharing. I’m going on the RS Scandinavia tour and will hope to see it.
Thanks Judy, I made it on my way back 2018. Actually this day was really hot: 32°C / 90°F (end of June).
