I will be in Norway at the end of June and beginning of July. I am looking for a guide assistance with genealogy - locating a relative’s former home and possible relatives in the Bergen, Norway area. Does anyone have any recommendations out there?
I recommend to ask Bergen's tourist office.
If you go far back enough you might find also German ancestors which worked in Bergen during Hanseatic League. The German kontor had partly over 2,000 people in Bergen. In its prosperous period, German merchants (Bergenfahrer) and craftsmen made up a quarter of Bergen's population.
Have you done any genealogical research on the family?
Several years ago I looked for Danish genealogy tours. Googling came up with several companies offering to do the research, plan a tour around ancestral homes and find living relatives. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt, so wasn't looking to hire a genealogist to do it for me. I also found a Danish website that has the church and census records from the Danish National Archives and forum members willing to help with transcription of the gothic hand and translation where my lists of Danish genealogy terms and Google translate fail.
FamilySearch.org, the LDS genealogy website, also has community groups, community.familysearch.org. There is a group for Norway and another for Nordic countries. Similar to the Danish website I found, forum members are willing to help with transcription and translation. You have to create an account, but the FamilySearch websites are free.
Good luck.
If anyone has a specific person for Bergen, I’d love to have that. I could not find any in my Rick Steve’s book. We’ve hit a dead end on FamilySearch due to birth year recorded differently, names changing, etc.
I asked for help on a Facebook Norwegian genealogy. Within minutes members were posting old newspaper article with my great-uncle's address in Alesund.
I am in Bergen now and have the family farm area outside of Bergen. Does anyone know of a private genealogy tour guide to assist us in finding the exact area and possibly taking us there that we could hire? Thank you.
forpaulam, I cannot vouch for any of these, but a quick Google search showed up a few resources in Bergen:

Thank you! I placed inquiries with both of them.
You might also try the Norwegian National Archives. They may have genealogy volunteers in their reading room.
