I have looked everywhere and it seems as if the Flam railway tickets are the most expensive part of the NIAN tour. Trying to book a train from Flam to Myrdal and it is over $100/person is this correct or am I missing something? Trying to do a diy Nutshell tour but that leg is killing any savings I would have. Thanks keep on traveling!
Are you looking at the vy.no site? The regular fare is 538nok (currently $53US).
However, if you are traveling to or from Oslo you should purchase the ticket as a single journey from Flåm to Oslo. Depending on availability fares from Flåm to Myrdal to Oslo can be as low as around $60US.
When are you traveling? Tickets that include the Myrdal Oslo portion usually go on sale 90-120 days prior to travel.
I may have been looking at first class tickets. I will look again in the morning.
In the winter months the single fare Flam to Myrdal is even lower than 538Kr- at 399Kr.
The only line in Norway to have seasonal fares, because most of it's traffic is tourists.
The Flåmsbana, the train between Flåm and Myrdal, is all one class.
The train from Myrdal to Oslo offers standard and Comfort class.
If you are DIY the Nutshell, you need to book the train segments on the vy.no site. Prices will be quoted and paid in NOK, not USD.
I think I got it all figured out I don't know what the heck I was doing wrong. To add to the complication it looks like they're working on the railway line during our planned day on the nutshell. It looks as if though we might have to take a bus about halfway between Myrdal and Oslo going into Oslo.
I think I got it all figured out it was just a little confusing.
Totally looking forward to this it's going to be exciting.
I am also planning a DIY NIN in April during rail maintenance and would like to verify that the train tickets that are currently available on the VY site won’t be changed to bus travel due to the work on the railway. I’m waiting to hear back from VY customer service, but am wondering if anyone else is doing a DIY at this time. Note- Fjordtours does not offer their NIN tours on this weekend, 4/25. & 4/26 which is why I’m trying to plan this on my own.
Vy are selling tickets this early, but have been notified of scheduled engineering work.
Vy only run the trains, Bane NOR maintain the tracks. So until Bane NOR have firmed up their plans, no-one knows which portion or portions of the route will have rail replacement buses.
Exactly what is happening should be firmed up 3 months out, so in 2 to 3 weeks time.
Vy are a multi modal operator so also run high quality motor coaches, and the primary function of the Oslo to Bergen line is to convey Norwegian passengers, as opposed to overseas tourists of any nationality. Year round they do also run a Flam to Oslo motor coach service, in addition to the rail service.
The road journey itself is spectacular, so it would not be the end of the world to me (or many locals) if I was put on a bus to Oslo.
Essentially It's a risk you take when booking any form of transport many months ahead of time. But trains don't sell out months in advance, so there is no harm in waiting if you don't want to take the risk of travelling on a motor coach.
