Flam or Aurland without a car in Late October

Hello! My husband, son, and I will be traveling to Norway in late October.

We will be taking NiN from Oslo to Bergen and are planning to stop for 2 nights either in Flam or Aurland. My preference would be to rent a car and drive to Aurland, but it looks like renting a car in Flam will be difficult or impossible... plus we would need to also rent a car seat because my son is only 3 years old. I know there's a bus that goes between the two towns, but in October it only runs twice per day (once in the AM and once in the PM), and I don't want us to get stranded in Aurland and miss the next leg of NiN.

I've found a couple of car rental companies in Flam and can call about the car seat but if it's not possible, are there any other transportation options in the off-season? Are cruise ships still an issue in late October? One of the main reasons we're considering Aurland instead of Flam is to try and avoid the cruise ships.

Right now, I have one hotel booked in Flam and another booked in Aurland. They are both cancelable.

(Note: I know I've seen similar questions on here and other forums, but they all seem to be about travel in the summer, so I'd like more clarification about transportation options in the off-season specifically.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Why would you get stranded in Aurland? You do know that the Flåm-Gudvangen boat stops in Aurland as well, so you can just board it there instead the next day. There's no need to faff around with trying to get back to Flåm. And if the bus options from Flåm Aurland don't suit your plan, there are boats.

It sounds like you're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be.

Hi Badger. Thank you for the reply. Actually, I didn't know that the ferry also stops at Aurland as that was not an "optional stop" location when booking NiN on FjordTours.com. It says depart from Flam and arrive in Gudvangen with no mention of other stops in between.

So the boat stops at Aurland year-round?

That's one of the drawbacks of using that kind of booking sites, apart from the cost. I hope you're not booking the entire trip from them. The boat schedule can be found here: https://www.norwaysbest.com/globalassets/pdf/rutetider/rutetider-2024/fjord-cruise-naroyfjord-2024.pdf

From Flåm to Aurland you can also take the regular Norled ferry that is probably a bit cheaper. https://www.norled.no/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/flamsruten-2024-2.pdf

@Badger - Thank you for the links to the schedules! Those are very helpful to have on hand.

And no, I haven't booked any transportation for this trip yet, aside from our airfare to Oslo and back home. I've only booked lodging for 8 of 13 nights, and none through FjordTours. Although I do see the appeal and convenience of booking everything through one website versus many different sites/apps and coordinating everything myself.

For example:
If I try to use the Vy app to purchase the Oslo>Myrdal>Flam train tickets on our preferred travel date (October 24), it gives me the options for departure times but says "Not open for sale yet." I learned that Vy only allows advanced purchases within 90 days of travel. I also can't see how much the fares cost because of this, but I'm assuming the pricing for each route is the same throughout the year and only the timetables change depending on the season? Is that right?
The Norway's Best site allows me to purchase the Flam>Aurland and Aurland>Gudvangen tickets now.
But if I try to book through FjordTours, it looks like I can purchase everything now and gives me the total cost for all passengers... although online it does not give the option to stop in Aurland instead of Flam.

Are these rhe correct sites/apps to purchase tickets?

  1. Trains from Oslo to Myrdal to Flam via Vy.
  2. Boat from Flam to Aurland via NorwaysBest or Norled.
  3. Boat from Aurland to Gudvangen via NorwaysBest.
  4. Bus from Gudvangen to Voss via Skyss (I couldn't find how to translate the Skyss site to English on my mobile phone.)
  5. Train from Voss to Bergen via Vy.

The fare between Oslo and Myrdal varies; you can save money by buying early, and the trains do sometimes sell out. To get an idea of the range of prices, take a look at morning departures for the next date with availability and for one of the latest dates now on sale. However, I imagine the highest price you'll encounter for October will be less than the highest fare for the immediate future even if you buyyour tickets late, because demand is probably lower in October.

I loved staying at Aurland, but we had a car. Without a car, it will be much easier for your family to stay in Flam.

Cruises still stop there, but not often by late October.

I don't know the details about Vy's pricing, but you can look up what it costs in a few months and the price in October will probably be similar if you buy the tickets in advance.

But if I try to book through FjordTours, it looks like I can purchase
everything now and gives me the total cost for all passengers...

But that price will be much higher than if you buy them yourself.

Yes! But you don't need to bother with the Skyss website, use their app to buy the ticket or just buy the ticket from the bus driver.

Thank you all for for very helpful tips!!

@mnannie - Could you please elaborate on why Flam will be an easier destination without a car than Aurland? TIA.
