Flam/Aurland area itinerary

Hello,

I am traveling with my husband and 2 children (ages 15 and 12) to Norway in August. We plan to spend 2 nights in Aurland (already booked). My plan was to take the train from Oslo, Flamsbana to Flam, pick up a car in Flam and have it for our 2 days in the area, however car rentals are very expensive at around 2000 NOK per day. I don't see how we can do what we want to do without a car, but maybe we could consolidate our plans to one day with a car rental. Here's our plans:

Day 1:
Train from Oslo to Myrdal
Flamsbana from Myrdal to Flam
Zipline/bike/hike Flam Valley
Stay just outside Aurland (it looks like bus/ferry service is limited and our accommodation would be a long walk outside of Aurland!)

Day 2:
Drive to Stegastein viewpoint
Visit Borgund Stave Church
Possible hiking in area

Day 3:
Continue NIN route to Gudvangen

Are there any alternatives for transportation that I'm missing or should we just suck it up and pay the price for 2 days of car rental? Thanks!

In general there are also buses and taxis. Taxis can become very expensive, rides are not generally metered.

Would you plan to return the rental car where you pick it up? One-way rentals are expensive.
Would rental car mean that you do not use the train?

I do not get exactly the alternatives - what to compare. A rental car for 4 persons can be worth it if you address also destinations others do not do.

We would return the rental car to Flam and continue on the NIN route. I guess I was wondering if its possible to reduce our car rental to 1 day instead of 2, but I'm still not sure that's very feasible to get to our accommodation outside of Aurland.

There is no car rental in Flam.

You could interrupt a regular train journey Oslo - Bergen (with https://www.vy.no/en) in Voss and rent / return a car there. How about that one? Would give you also the freedom to see much more places NiN tourists would not or very rarely see.

Can you add one or two days in the area?

FYI the 2000 NOK per day rental in Flåm = approx $189 for a VW Golf.,

Never heard of this provider. Was only aware of a few small e-cars such as in Geiranger.

The cars do not look new. And contact in privacy policy is in Switzerland. Too many question marks for me. I stay on the recommendation to rent / return in Voss.

If you want to try this, please post a feedback after your journey.

Picking up the car in Voss was very convenient. We picked up the keys from the front desk of the hotel that is adjacent to the train station. Drop off was more problematic. Dropped it at the rental office and taxi to the train station. In any case, I didn’t see any recognizable rental office in Flam, although I think that such a service would be welcome, (at least during the peak summer season).

@dpoweron Where did you rent from in Voss? I only see Avis and Hertz as rental options in Voss. Avis is sold out for our dates and the price of the Hertz rental is similar to the price in Flam.

I've given this a bit more thought and looked at a few other options. We were thinking of possibly renting a car for a day in Bergen to drive to some waterfalls closer to the Hardangerfjord, so I'm wondering if it would make more sense to combine all the car rentals into one. We could remove a night from Bergen and add it somewhere along the way between Flam and Bergen. There is not an extra night available at our accommodation in Aurland, but I did see an interesting accommodation in between Gudvangen and Voss that would be a bit more central and we could daytrip to everything in the area. Would we be giving up a great location if we move from Aurland to that spot? Also, if we rented a car in Oslo and returned it in Bergen, driving for most of the trip instead of taking the train, but we still do the Flamsbana and the fjord cruise from Flam to Gudvangen, would we be really missing out on the scenic views from the train between Oslo and Myrdal? Any feedback you can give is much appreciated! Thank you!
