Do I need to buy a ferry ticket ahead of time, or can I buy one at the dock?
Thanks.

I don’t think there’s any ferry (that carries vehicles) from Flam to Gudvangen. But there are tourist cruise boats. Here’s a schedule that I found online: https://www.norwaysbest.com/globalassets/pdf/rutetider/rutetider-2022/fjord-cruise-naroyfjord-2022.pdf
The Flam-Gudvangen boats are referred to as ferries. They don't carry vehicles, just passengers. These days they are basically tourist vehicles. I believe individual sailings can sell out. You can buy a ticket online from NorwaysBest.com. Those folks handle the Fjord1 ferry tickets. If you arrive in town without a ticket and they are still available, you can get a ticket at the Flam Visitor Center (which is primarily a ticket-selling agency, not a tourist office). I suspect it's part of the same company behind the NorwaysBest website.
There's a second company offering the same route, Lustrabaatane; check its schedule at lustrabaatane.no. The latter says you don't need to get the ticket in advance. The Lustrabaatane boats are older, but the trip takes the same amount of time, about 2 hours.
Everybody and his brother seems to want to see the fjords this year. Personally, I wouldn't want to arrive in Flam without that ferry ticket (or without a Flamsbana ticket). This year there are only four boats a day even during peak season, 2 operated by each company. [Corrected.]
