I am wondering if the ferry mentioned in the guidebook no longer operates? I tried several websites to see the ferry schedule and on one - DirectFerries.com, it says in red "no further sailings." Has this route been discontinued? We had planned to spend one full day in Balestrand just to do this trip to the Hopperstad Stavkyrkje.

The ferry that crosses the fjord near Balestrand is the Vangsnes-Dragsvik ferry. After the ferry you need to drive a few miles to see that stave church.

I think Norled operates the ferry. You should be able to find reliable schedule info on its website. You might also ask your hotel what the ferry situation is.
I stayed in Flam partly because it is possible to get to the Borgund stave church from there (quite easily during high summer, it turns out). I'd recommend checking on whether the walk from the ferry landing to the Hopperstad church is a steep, uphill climb. It probably isn't, but that's something I'd want to know beforehand.

Thank you for these thoughtful replies! I will contact the hotel where we hope to stay. If the Stave church doesn't work out, sounds like we could have an equally nice day taking the ferry up Fjaerlands Fjord.
