Ferries not cooperating with my schedule 😊

Me again. Thanks all for the input and just when I went to book the ferries they are not running on the days I need! First world problem I know. So my dilemma and looking for guidance…

Oslo May 24 to 28

Flam have hostel booked May 28 to 30 buy could also stay in Sognadal/Balestrand. And could do 3 days here but do not have a car so wondering would it be easy to get around. I was unsure as it is a longish ferry crossing from Flam. I know we can go from Balestrand to Bergen but it seems the spectacular fjord crossing is from Flam to Bergen? Any advise here?

Originally I was staying in Bergen for 3 nights and wanted to leave on a ferry to Alesund on 2nd but no ferries until the 3rd. Then spend 2 nights on Alesund, back on the ferry for 1 night and then 3 nights in Trondheim before flying home on June 9th.

Bottom line is I have an extra night and not sure where to put it. We are active, slower travelers and want to hike and explore. Don’t really want to rent a car. Not sure if we should do 3 days in Balestrand and explore that area or another day in Bergen but maybe 4 is overkill?

Thanks everyone.

Are you checking the Hurtigruten Port to Port page?

I'm seeing the Nordkapp departing Bergen at 8:30pm.

It may be that cabins are not available to book. But the ferry is running and you can purchase a fare without a cabin.

There is a sailing on 2 June on the Nordkapp (you find it by looking for the full voyage) but it isn't taking bookings for the port to port, or indeed for the short sector Bergen to Trondheim- only for the round trip.
The ferry most people do is the Flam to Gudvangen one, the Flam to Bergen one calls at Balestrand on the way. There is also a morning short ferry run from Balestrand to Bergen.
You could take the normal fast ferry (not Hurtigruten, but same route and more ports) from Bergen to Måløy on 2 June mid afternoon, overnight there, then the 0530 Hurtigruten from Måløy to Alesund next day as an unberthed passenger for the 4 hour trip.

Stuart, the US Hurtigruten site is allowing port to port bookings from Bergen to Ã…lesund for June 2 at this time.

@jeanm- it wasn't when I looked, and still isn't with a cabin, only as deck class. Hence why I was trying to think laterally. The website is struggling but the fast ferry is route 190. I think it leaves at around 1630 and arrives at about 2100.

Thanks you guys but when I look I see nothing on either ferry company that has a cabin. I know it is one night, but I finished that inter railing part of my life ;)

So what do you think of adding that extra day in Balestrand and taking the ferry on June 3rd? That would mean deleting Flam. Then taking Havila on June 3rd?

I do appreciate ALL the help

Nicky, have you considered flying from Bergen to Ã…lesund and adding an extra night in Ã…lesund? With 3 nights, you could cruise the Geirangerfjord one day and take a day tour to Trollstigen another day.

IMO, even though Flåm is in a beautiful setting, the village isn't the draw. But the tour to Stegastein Viewpoint and the cruise through the Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen were definitely worthwhile.

If you do decide an extra night in Bergen, I think you will find plenty to do in and around Bergen.

So on 31 May go to Balestrand. Then on 1 June do the Glacier cruise from Balestrand. Either do a 2nd night in Balestrand then the morning ferry to Bergen on 2 June; or on 1 June connect straight through to Bergen off the Glacier cruise, and have 2 nights instead of 3 in Bergen.
I think that works.

Thanks you two!

I will book the ferry from Bergen to Alesund on June 3 and then June 6 from Bergen to Trondheim. That will give 2 days in Alesund and 2 days in Trondheim. I am really trying or was really trying to have stays of 3 days in most locations

You guys are great!

I would not have wanted to miss the extremely scenic Flam-Gudvangemn (Naeroyfjord) ferry trip. The route from Balestraand to Bergen is not the same.

Unless you want to spend your time hiking, I would not plan to stay in Balestrand for multiple nights without a rental car unless I had confirmed availability of excursions of interest on that side of the Sognefjord on pertinent dates. Public-bus service is very, very infrequent, even in the peak months, and I suspect options in May could be quite limited.

I've managed to find the express boat timetable now for Bergen to Floro and Maloy (for reference)- https://www.skyss.no/globalassets/reise/rutetabellar/bat-og-ferje/b%C3%A5t-og-ferje/190.pdf

It is run by Norled, but on behalf of Skyss (the regional transit authority) so is on the Skyss website.

I thought there was a connection for anyone who wanted to connect from Balestrand direct to the north (avoiding Bergen) and this confirms that you can do so at Rysjedalsvika- arrive at 0941 from the Sognefjord, and depart at 0957.

It is a reasonable assumption that with 3 days in Flam the OP will have done the Gudvangen fjord trip. I am 100% certain that the daily Glacier cruise from Balestrand does not sell out months and months ahead of time. That is one reason why it is a well established day trip from Bergen- you can turn up and book with a day or two notice. Certainly in the past you could do so at Bergen TIC. Another reason is that it is so much easier to arrange than the Norway in a Nutshell.
Currently bookings haven't opened for 2026- I just don't see that as a problem.

It is also worth noting that KLM fly from Alesund to Amsterdam, which provides the option for one connection flights from Alesund to anywhere on the KLM network.

There is also a year round daily bus from Flam to Balestrand at 1131, change at Sogndal- arrive 1605- Norway BusEkspress 420 then Skyss route 820 and Balestrand depart 1310 Flam arrive 1610 in the other direction- it uses two of the cross fjord car ferries.
Also daily year round buses from Balestrand to Bergen at 0925, 1310 and 1605.
Use the Entur journey planner for public transport in Norway- https://entur.no/
