Just coming to the end of a month of train travel through Scandinavia was very critical of expense and mandatory bookings ($20!!!) but if your smart and plan around long trips you can't beat it I've saved $1000 on train travel even with mandatory booking (Sweden fast train) just make sure the conductor does not click twice on one days travel NB the 9pm rule is awesome! Use it!Short trips buy online SJ or NSB mini pris etc very cheap if prepaid in advance.
