Driving Oslo-Bergen-Oslo

I am thoroughly confused on the best way to organize this trip. We will have 3 nights and will rent a car. Should we go Oslo directly to Bergen, spend night ( night 1) and most of day prior to beginning our trip back in the direction of Oslo and visiting Fjord? If so, what is the best area to stay (night 2)? Think we would like to take the Flåm railway and cruise - spend our 3rd night in same area/hotel?

Your suggestions are truly appreciated.

So you are arriving from where? Already in Europe or far away? If you will be jet-lagged you might want to consider overnighting in Oslo. Do u want to see Oslo and Bergen or just fjord area? Seems like you will be driving a lot! You don’t really need the car, especially if you want to do Flam railway.

We are arriving from the United States. We will spend 2 nights in Oslo prior to making this trip and 2 more nights prior to our departure home - late arrival and departure.

Oslo to Bergen to Oslo? Most visitors would do the Norway in a Nutshell travel mode combination tour. Train to Mydal, Flam train to Flam. boat to Godvangen, coach/bus to Voss, train to Bergen. Many options back to Oslo including the Bergen Line. Why would you want to drive?

The round trip can be accomplished in less than 24 hours returning to Oslo by overnight sleeper.

We really prefer having the freedom to travel on our timetables and at our leisure. I’m really trying to decide as to what areas we should stay overnight. To be able to access the area easily. I’m not too keen on staying in Flåm. Just not sure where might be best.
