We want to split the long drive between Bergen and Alesund roughly in half, and would like recommendations on where to spend our one night on the road.
Thanks!
Stryn, Norway—on an inlet of the Faleidfjorden— is surrounded by wilderness with glaciers and waterfalls you can visit. There’s also the nearby National Scenic Highway that was built by hand in the 19th century and offers views of Norwegian backcountry wilderness you’d usually need to backpack to see. The Norwegian government listed this historic 26-kilometer road on its official “Nasjonale Turistvegar Gamle Strynefjellsvegen”— it’s list of National Scenic Highways in Norway.
The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen has opened by mid-May in recent years. It takes 90 minutes to drive from Stryn to the highway’s start at Hjelle and then to its endpoint at Grotli.
Did you check one-way surcharge for rental cars?
Heads up: Gamle Strynefjellsvegen is partly a gravel road which increases chances for damages on rental cars. Maybe take the maximum insurance package.
I recommend Jotunheimen Fjellstue at scenic road 55 (Sognefjell). Also Nes Gard, Kvaale Gard or Grotli Hotel are good options.
In general it is a good idea to spend some time on Dalsnibba in the morning of day 2 (see opening hours).
