Does Norway accept Euros?

What cash do I need in Norway?

Always, always use local currency. You will get the best exchange rate. The currency is the Krona. They may accept both dollars and euro but it will not be to your advantage.

If you have a credit card that doesn't charge you a foreign transaction fee, that will be far more convenient and cost effective in Norway. The only thing you might want a few kroner for is to tip housekeeping in your hotel, and you can get them from an ATM.

But no, euros are not accepted.

Yes, definitely - always, always use local currency.

You might find an odd shop or two that caters entirely to tourists (which might prompt you to ask yourself, do I really want to be in this shop?), but if you do, you will almost certainly get a horrible exchange rate. If you're buying an ice cream, that's not going to kill you. But if it's something expensive - and honestly, EVERYTHING in Norway looks expensive to me - then it's a very poor money choice.

If you walk into some random shop or restaurant in your home town, and you ask if you can pay for your sandwich or t-shirt in Turkish Lira, you're going to get a look (or a laugh). Asking to pay with foreign currency almost anywhere is going to get a similar reaction.

All that said, I was in Bergen 2 weeks ago. Naturally, prices everywhere were in Norwegian Kroner, of course. I did see one place that had a sign (in English) saying they would accept Euros or even dollars. But that was a t-shirt shop that appeared to be only selling things to tourists, most of whom appeared to have just stepped off a cruise ship. Of course, virtually every place we went accepted credit cards (even the hot dog stand).

Bottom line: no matter where you are, always pay in the local currency (for a whole list of good reasons).

It is not easy to find a bank-operated ATM in Oslo, that's how uninterested the Norwegians are in handling cash. Maybe it's easier in Bergen.

We spent 2½ weeks in Norway in 2023. Never went to an ATM. Credit card everywhere.

We were there this past July. Never used cash in 10 days, everything is credit card. We even gave a tip to the guide for a "free tour" in Oslo on the credit card. She had a reader and we tipped that way. We were in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and never used cash in any country. It is very different from the US.

Norway is not on the euro. They use their own currency, the Norwegian krone.

In practice, you will almost always use your card in Norway, not cash.

So be sure you have a card that doesn’t charge a fee for every international transaction !! They will add up quickly !!

In Norway you just need a credit card or an accepted cashless payment method. Country's payment is 99% on credit cards.

If cash you will need their currency NOK.

Euro is very seldomly accepted.
