DIY Norway in a Nutshell

My wife and I will be in Bergen on August 4 to do the Norway in a Nutshell tour, with a overnight stop in Flam, ending in Oslo. However, we want to book our own itinerary since we are planning on purchasing a Eurail Global Pass. With it being high season we are concerned about the availability of the trains along the route. While we are staying in Flam we wanted to take the Flam Railway toward Mydral and hike back to Flam. Will we need reservations for the Flam Railway? As I understand it a reservation is required for the Mydral-Oslo train. Unfortunately, according to NSB in order to include our Eurail Global Pass we need to call and book the reservation. Is there another way to book the reservation without having to call? Thanks in advance.

The Flåm Railway was a one hour trip down into the fjord for us, as we started our Norway in a Nutshell trip in Oslo. And it was really the most beautiful part of the joirney. The fast ferry out to Bergen was not as nearly as beautiful of scenery as we've seen in other places. I doubt you'll be required to have reservations on the railroad for that short trip.
If you have questions about your trip, you might want to look at the Flåm website:

As of last year, Myrdal-Flam tickets are sold for a specific date and time (but still no seat assignment). Your ticket will be discounted with the rail pass.

Rail Europe is currently able to book two afternoon departures on the Myrdal-Oslo route through mid-May, so try that link again in a couple of months. You can also probably book it at any staffed train station in Scandinavia.

NSB does not sell tickets more than 89 days in advance. If you want to take advantage of the Minipris advance purchase pricing, the earlier you buy the cheaper and Minipris may not be available close to departure.

During peak travel periods like Easter Week, trains have sold out. The summer peak travel occurs during the July "Fellesferie" business shutdown generally the three week period starting with the second week of July. You may be beyond Fellesferie travel by early August.

So once I arrive in Norway I should be able to purchase tickets for the Flam Railway?

You can buy the Flåm to Myrdal tickets from the NSB website when you are within the 89 days of travel window (i.e. starting early May). Current one way ticket pricing is 360 NOK.

The online payment security has been evolving and you may have to call to use your credit card to secure the purchase:
