Day trip suggestions around Bergen

Hello, we will be in Bergen next week (July 9-12 - flying in and out) and plan to do day trips (Geiranger, Sognefjord, etc.)

Any suggestions about how to handle the logistics -
Do day trips need to be planned ahead and made reservations for ahead of time?
Is there a tourist information center (or something alike) available?
Need to rent a car to go around?
Transport to the airport
Suggestions for staying - mainly convenience to get to the airport and day trips

You're almost there, so do stop into the Tourist Information Office upon arrival. It's upstairs in the Torghallen market building, next to the fish market, open daily 9:00-22:00, with plenty of info for outside the city as well as in. www.visitbergen.com.
