Creating an account on Ruter app

It looks like this is the easiest way to buy tickets in Oslo, especially since we will be playing it by ear on exactly what we will do in a couple of weeks. However I am stuck creating an account. The first step is “Enter your mobile number so we can send an sms”. There’s a way to enter a U.S. number, however I never receive the text. The app says the code was sent and moves to the screen to enter it - but I never receive the text.

I have my payment method accomplished and it LOOKS like I can buy a ticket without an account. If so, I won’t worry about creating an account. Can someone confirm that? I have googled and did read that U.S. credit cards are a problem, but mine is saved.

As an alternative, I have the Vy app set up and have my long distance train tickets there. It looks like I can buy local tickets for Ruter using this app. Correct?

Thank you!

I have the same issue trying to use the Fly2Get app which I would like to use to buy a ticket from the airport into central Oslo upon arrival. I suspect both this app and the Ruter app are set up the same way and don't seem to work. I will figure it out when I arrive at the airport, I guess.

As far as I know you can buy ticket without an account, so I don't think there is any reason to worry. But yes, US cards can be a problem since US banks have been very reluctant to join the 21st century and adopt modern security standards.

I've read this a couple of times and I'm not really sure what app you mean, but since you mention the airport I suspect it is a very strange way to spell Flytoget? Is that correct?

For myself, I ended up only using the Vy app - I purchased my long distance train tickets with PayPal but never actually purchased or used metro tickets. And I am back, so can’t experiment further.

For getting to and from the airport, I just used the machine at either end when I arrived. It was very simple. Choose language, then answer the questions, use Apple Pay to pay. The ticket prints out with the next departure time and tells you which track. I used Vy trains, not Flytoget.

I don't know about apps for Oslo. But I know there is an all zones 7 day multi modal ticket for Oslo. It includes Vy trains (but not FlyToget) from the airport (and throughout the greater Oslo region), and is 852Kr (full fare) or 426Kr for the week for seniors (that includes overseas seniors).

The one day version is 291Kr/146Kr so one week pays for itself by Day 3.

It also includes Ruter's buses, trams, metro lines and ferries, and can be loaded onto a travelcard (plastic card), as well as used in the app.

It would take me a lot of ferreting back through e-mails, but I know someone from Seattle who used that last year. She is a total non public transport user. But, from memory, her Travel Consultant had given her a no value travelcard and she just paid for and loaded the ticket onto the travelcard at the airport and reported it as being a very easy process. She isn't a Senior (by Norwegian definitions) but her travelling partner is, and got the discounted ticket. But the blank travelcard could also have been obtained at the airport. At least in Oslo we had a very happy convert to using transit!

There are benefits sometimes to being a luddite, like me!
