Is cash needed for the Norway in a Nutshell legs on ships and busses Flam to Gudvangen and Gudvangen to Voss or are credit cards now accepted on board?
We based ourselves in Flam and did a DIY NIN, including the ferry from Flam to Gudvangen and a bus back to Flam from Gudvangen and cash was not needed. Tap and pay on the busses and tap and pay at the ferry ticket office in Flam. We did not take the bus to Voss from Gudvangen but I can’t imagine they wouldn’t take credit as it appeared to be the same bus operator.
I didn't do the NIN fjord trips, but did take a Rodne cruise out of Bergen. The on-board cafe took CCs and ApplePay.
We spent 9 nights, 8 days in Oslo and Bergen last month. I never needed cash. In fact, I didn't have any kroner with me at all.
Thank you both for you input. Was the ferry Lustrabataatane or The Fjords? Steves prefers one over the other, but seems to indicate that cash in needed for both ferry and the Gudvangen-Voss bus leg. And here's hoping the Vy system is able to repair the Oslo-Myrdal section quickly and nothing else occurs! May also look into the cruise out of Bergen.
When was Rick's advice printed? Norway is rapidly becoming cashless. Rick may be out of date.
Ask your question on TripAdvisor. There are many NIN questions there and people who have taken the journey very recently. You may get more up-to-date experiences.
We took The Fjords. Credit tap and pay on board as well. Agree with other poster in that Norway appears to be nearly cashless. I usually prefer to have local currency in hand when going to Europe to serve as a backup but I didn’t even bother to hit an ATM on this trip.
June, 2023 we never got any cash for either Norway or Iceland and we never needed any. We didn't observe anyone else paying with cash. Even trivial purchases (coffee, candy bar, etc.) were paid by cc. It is useful to have a pin for your cc if you will be buying gasoline.
During our Summer 2022 trip to Norway which included the fjords & nutshell we never used cash everything is credit card friendly.
Wondering how travelers are tipping tour guides if everything is cashless? Or is tipping not expected in Norway?
We did an 18 day trip (most of it self-driving) without any cash. We had read that there was one mountain road that we would have needed to pay in cash, but we chose not to drive on it. Ferries and pay toilets all took our cards. Tipping isn't expected.
