I am planning on 3 weeks in Scandinavia this summer. We will be in Denmark, Norway and Sweden for about a week each. Since all countries have their own kroner I am wondering if we should get any cash or just use credit card. One caveat is that we will be renting a car in Norway so will be a bit off the beaten path at times. Also going to Aero Island in Denmark. Those are the places I see the need for a small amount of cash. Thoughts?
We used only cards for 18 days this past September. The only place we read about that needed cash was a payment box for a private road.
Even the two pay toilets we used only took cards.
These countries live a card-based life. Ærø is very well touristically equipped due to hundreds and thousands of German sailing ships approaching the "dänische Südsee". Marstal is one of the entry / leaving harbors between Germany and Denmark.
Especially in Norway, it can be difficult to use cash. Definitely don't withdraw much from an ATM--not that you'll have much opportunity to do that if your Norway visit begins in Oslo, because ATMs are super-scarce in that city. The first ATM I found in Oslo had a line of 10-12 people waiting to use it! Over the course of my 3+ weeks in Norway, I needed cash twice: for a luggage locker in a train station (not in Oslo or Bergen) and for a public toilet in a park in Oslo.
