Car rental in Stavanger

Hi all,
Looking for car rental recommendations in Stavanger. The plan is to pick up car in Stavanger and then drop it in Alesund at the end of our trip. I recall seeing a few bad Hertz reviews both here and on Trip Advisor.
Thank you in advance 🙂

A year and a half ago, we rented from Hertz in Bergen, and returned it in Bergen, after driving around lots of Norway. The price was the best of all that we checked, and while the self-service checkout/return kiosk was cumbersome, we were able to find a human Hertz employee to help with the processes. I’d recommend them if you can do a Stavenger/Alesund rental, and if nobody else meets their price.

They also made it easy to take it on car ferries, which you’ll undoubtedly run into. We got a discount on the car ferry rates because of having Hertz’s ferry pass already installed in the car, and didn’t have to pay the ferryman at the time. We got a small additional charge from Hertz after we’d turned in the car, which reflected all the ferry fares. Easy and relatively cheap.

BTW, Norway now emphasizes electric vehicles, and we rented an electric VW. Learning where, and how to recharge the car was a bit of a learning experience, but it worked, and was cheaper than filling up with gas, even though the process took longer.

Kim, sorry the “VE” was a typographical error. It was supposed to say “They,” meaning Hertz, as in “They also made it easy to take it on car ferries.” I didn’t catch that while proofreading, but I’ve now corrected the original message.

VW is Volkswagen.

Did you already check the extra costs for one-way rental?

You will always find bad reviews on rental car firms - in my experience around 80% of responsibility was at traveler side. Of course finger-pointing is easier for some people although then 3 fingers point in own direction. And in total Hertz at Stavanger airport has 67 reviews. Ask yourself how many cars the rent every day.

One important thing to what Cyn wrote: on open short-distance ferries EVs are fine and welcome but they are not accepted to be transported on Havila coast line ships and also not in some parking garages.

The massive state funding program of Norway started around 10 years ago and the result is that Norway has now 800,000 more cars but the plain number of registered cars with Diesel and regular fuel motors did not change to 20 years ago.

Finally good read: how to go on an EV road trip in Norway.

Got it, thanks Cyn!! I was thinking boy I had better figure out this terminology / lingo that must have to do with electric cars !! I really have to know how to sign up for VE to facilitate my being able to easily drive on the ferries!! hahahaa

And thanks for that link and those notes, Mark.
