Can someone give me some suggestions to my Norway itinerary?

Backdrop:
1. Total 7 days in Norway and the departure flight is around 6 PM on the 7th day
2. The inbound and outbound flights are within Schengen
3. The Norway portion of my trip is solo, so I will not rent a car to drive.
4. It's in late May
5. I will fly into Bergen or Ålesund in the morning on the 1st day
6. I don't want to spend too much time in museums
7. I'm an average hiker

Below is the itinerary. I'm wondering what needs to change. Also, are Bergen and Bergen to Flåm not as scenic as the other days and should I skip them?

Day 1: Fly into Bergen, explore Bergen
Day 2: Bergen to Flåm, then to Gudvangen on ferry
Day 3: Gudvangen to Geiranger on bus and/or ferry
Day 4: Geiranger to Ålesund on bus, explore Ålesund
Day 5: Fly to Oslo, explore Oslo
Day 6: Day trip to Flåm
Day 7: Explore Oslo and depart

This itinerary is not helpful because it does not tell what you plan to do at a location. And "explore" is very unconcrete.

D2 and 6: Why two times Flåm?
How do you plan to do D3?

Seems you underestimate the size and travel times in Norway.

Your ratio of traveling compared to experiencing is very high. Tip: read Getting around Norway to get a better feeling of what you plan to do.

You can use you time much better by dropping Geiranger and to fill with Hardanger area, e. g. Dronningstien hike and Sørfjord.

Backdrop 3: I see no causality in this.

I consider Bergen a very pretty place; be aware it is very touristy. And rainy. The Flamsbana train from Myrdal to Flam gives beautiful views looking down onto the fjord. The Naeroyfjord ferry trip between Gudvangen and Flam is extremely scenic. The mainline train route from Bergen to Myrdal isn't as scenic as the trip farther east, toward Oslo, but it's fine and is necessary to facilitate the first two experiences.

Gudvangen is on the south side of the Sognefjord; Geiranger is well to the north. That looks like a thorny connection, but I haven't researched the schedules. Rural buses in Norway typically do not run frequently at all.

I suspect that the best way from Gudvangen to Geiranger is on the Coastal Express boat (Havila or Hurtigruten) from Bergen to Alesund then the bus to Geiranger.

Thus you could re-order this as
Day 1 Fly into Alesund
Day 2 Alesund to Geiranger by ferry at 1000 (or bus)
Day 3 Geiranger, then bus back to Alesund for the boat late evening (the ferry is at 1600, arrive Alesund 1900), So you can do ferry one way, bus back.
Day 4 arrive Bergen mid Afternoon, rest of the day for Bergen
Day 5 5 am in Bergen, pm Bus or bus/train via Voss to Gudvangen
Day 6 Gudvangen to Oslo- ferry to Flam, train to Oslo via Myrdal
Day 7 Explore Oslo and homer

Here is my revised itinerary. Hope this makes more sense compared to the original one.

Day 1: Fly to Bergen in the morning, explore Bergen
Day 2: Bergen - Voss - Myrdal - Flam - (via cruise) - Gudvangen - (via shuttle bus) - Flam - Aurland (Stegastein viewpoint)
Day 3: Aurland – Sogndal – Loen (Loen Skylift) – Hellesylt
Day 4: Hellesylt - (via cruise) - Geiranger – Ålesund
Day 5: Explore Ålesund in the day and then take train to Åndalsnes in late afternoon
Day 6: Leaving Åndalsnes at 7:18 AM to arrive at 12:48 PM in Oslo by train

There is no train from Alesund to Andalsnes.

You would need to use the #681 bus run by Trafikanten More og Romsdal.

Is #681 bus reliable to connect with the train to Oslo? The connection is only about 15 minutes.

Bus stop and rail station are adjacent at Andalsnes. The connection is like that because the bus is designed to be a connection into the train, so is timetabled as an efficient connection.

I've seen it several times, and seen it work as it should. But then anything can happen on the road.

I'd be happy, but whether you want to take a later train (just in case) and take a side trip on the Romsdalsgondolen I guess is a personal choice. It depends on attitude to risk.

Day 2 Alesund to Geiranger by ferry at 1000 (or bus)
Day 3 Geiranger, then bus back to Alesund for the boat late evening (the ferry is at 1600, arrive Alesund 1900), So you can do ferry one way, bus back.

isn31c, can you tell me what bus/ferry we can take from Alesund to Geiranger and back? Also the time table, if possible. We would stay in Geiranger and return to Alesund the next day. This would be just a back up plan in case some people who are traveling with us cancel their travel plans and we decide not to rent a car. Thanks!

In Summer (June to mid September) Vy run bus #25 as a direct bus at (I believe) 1300.

All year Trafikanten (referenced above) run a direct bus #110 from Hellesylt connecting out of the 1430 ferry from Geiranger. To get to Alesund that bus drives on to the Sykkylven to Magerholm ferry on the way.

Check those timings closer to your date of travel.

hello isn31c,

I checked both Vy bus #25 and FRAM, I could not find out these routes to go from Geiranger directly to Alesund.

On https://www.vybuss.no/globalassets/no_rutetabeller-og-linjekart/linjekart-no/vy-express-linjekart_2025.pdf, I don't see the stop Geiranger.

On https://frammr.no/_f/p2/i167f2bb2-6c09-4316-a191-ec4920b40ee9/110.pdf, I don't see the stop Geiranger either.

Can you please help me find out the details, like the URLs? Currently I plan to purchase to take the return ferry from Geiranger to Hellesylt and then a bus from Hellesylt to Alesund. If it can be done by just one ticket, it saves a lot of hassle.

Thanks again.

For the Vy #25 - see here (for any date after 1 June)- for other dates use the base website https://www.vy.no/en/

https://www.vy.no/en/see-travel-suggestions?from=Geiranger&fromDateTime=2025-06-01T04%3A05%3A08.000Z&to=%C3%85lesund&fromExternalId=NSR%3ANSR%3AGroupOfStopPlaces%3A153&toExternalId=NSR%3ANSR%3AGroupOfStopPlaces%3A28&fromPosition=62.102917%2C7.203391&toPosition=62.472253%2C6.154183&passengers=W3siaWQiOjAsImFnZSI6bnVsbCwiZGlzY291bnRzIjpbXSwiY2F0ZWdvcnkiOiJBZHVsdCIsIm5hbWUiOiJWb2tzZW4iLCJpbnRlcnJhaWxDb2RlIjpudWxsfV0&addons=W3sidHlwZSI6ImJpY3ljbGUiLCJudW1iZXJUb0J1eSI6MH0seyJ0eXBlIjoibGFyZ2VfYW5pbWFsIiwibnVtYmVyVG9CdXkiOjB9LHsidHlwZSI6InNtYWxsX2FuaW1hbCIsIm51bWJlclRvQnV5IjowfSx7InR5cGUiOiJzdHJvbGxlciIsIm51bWJlclRvQnV5IjowfSx7InR5cGUiOiJ3aGVlbGNoYWlyIiwibnVtYmVyVG9CdXkiOjB9XQ

There should also be a seasonal local bus #220 from Geiranger to Andalsnes but I am struggling to source that timetable currently from last year

For the route via Hellesylt use the Travel Planner here- https://frammr.no/journey/timetables-and-line-maps/bus/

This is the ferry timetable for Geiranger to Hellesylt (not yet with summer times in)- https://www.fergeruter.info/timetable/geiranger-hellesylt

The first ferry is at 11 am- I say that as there are also buses from Hellesylt to Alesund at 0704 and 1009- route #250.

I can bring the detailed timetable up on mobile but not PC- but the 110 commences further south at Stryn
