Bus Gudvangen to Voss

I just reserved a one way trip on the LustraBaatane ferry from Flam to Gudvangen on June 22. The ferry will leave Flam at 1:30pm and arrive in Gudvangen at 3:30pm. I assumed the ferry ticket included the bus from Gudvangen to Voss but I have now learned that it doesn't.

I checked the VY website and and learned that there is a VY express bus that leaves Gudvangen at 4:52pm arriving Voss at 6:00pm.

That would mean that we would have nearly a 90 minute wait. I thought I understood that the buses met the ferries for the trip to Voss. Had I known that, I would have chosen to spend more time in Flam and catch a later ferry.

Does anyone have some insight into the real truth?
Thanks,

Tom

Badger,

Thanks so much for your insight. I'm still a little confused. My ferry reservation leaves Flam at 1:30pm and arrives in Gudvangen at 3:30pm. It looks like the #950 bus departs at 5:25pm (a two hour wait).

Looking at Norwaysbest website, the afternoon ferry leaves Flam at 3:20 and arrives at 5:20 with the bus leaving Gudvangen at 5:45pm.(I assume the dock).

But, the #950 bus from the ferry dock is scheduled to leave 5 minutes after arrival of the 5:20pm ferry.

I chose the 1:30 ferry on LustraBaatane so I could get to Voss a little earlier. But it looks like regardless of the ferry I choose from Flam I'll get to Voss about 7pm unless I can catch the 4:52pm VY express bus bus from Gudvangen arriving in Voss at 6pm (still one hour and 20 minutes wait for the bus). That said, you are suggesting that that VY bus leaves from Gudvangen not the ferry dock. How far is Gudvangen from the dock and how do I get there?

Maybe I should just cancel my reservation with LustraBaatane and just take the later ferry arranged through NorwaysBest? (getting into Voss at 7PM?

What do you think?

Thanks,

Tom

As you've discovered, there are two companies running ferries between Flam and Gudvangen. There are also two flavors of buses between Gudvangen and Voss. As I understand it, the tourist bus that makes a detour to a scenic viewpoint on the way to Voss is scheduled, at least to some degree, to align with arrival times of the FjordTours ferries (the ones bookable through NorwaysBest), not the LustraBaatane ferries. I have no idea why that is.

Edited to add: The tourist bus to Gudvangen stops at the dock (confirmed by my experience last June). The somewhat faster "express bus" that doesn't take the scenic detour stops up the hill, as badger says.

There is a 16:25 bus as well as I mentioned. That, and other buses, use the bus stops on the main road, about a 400 m walk from the dock.

Thanks to all.

I think I'm just going to change to the 3:20 ferry from Flam and have the timely bus link. That will allow us to spend more time in Flam.

Thanks again to all.

Getting from Gudvangen to Voss on ‘public bus’ transit can be very confusing. After visiting Gudvangen, I now recommend taking the Skyss 950 bus that departs from the parking lot at the ferry terminal.

Background: It appears that there are at least three different ‘public transport’ bus companies serving Gudvangen; Skyss (skyss.no), YV Buss (vybuss.no), and NW (nor-way.no). Skyss is the public transit agency in Bergen and the surrounding area and appears to have the most predictable service. I originally planned on taking the VY450 bus from the Gudvangen E16 stop, but it didn’t show up because of an avalanche in the area. If you use VY, I encourage you to use their app to get notice of cancellations. VY also operates trains and my VY train from Gothenburg to Oslo was unexpectedly cancelled. I took the VY bus from Gothenburg to Oslo. The VY bus people were helpful but couldn’t issue a refund for my cancelled VY train. The NW420 bus stops at the Gudvangen E16 stop and had the only bus information posted in the bus shelter.

The parking/waiting area for the ferry is confusing. There are lots vehicles waiting for ferries and lots of tour buses. There are signs for the Skyss 950 bus, but they can be challenging to find. It appears that Skyss may provide multiple 950 buses at the same time to meet demand. I was able to use my credit card on the bus to pay for tickets and was able to get a seat on the second of two 950 buses. The bus driver was very friendly and helpful. The ride from Gudvangen to Voss is beautiful!

This really confuses people.

When you get off the ferry in Gudvangen, straight ahead of you will be where the buses congregate. There is a gift shop on your left and the toilets on your right. The buses will probably be lined up. They all go to Voss. There will be a few depending on how many people are on the ferry. You won't miss it nor will you not have a seat.

Don't lose sleep over this.

Actually, I believe there are some buses running between Gudvangen and Flam, with tickets sold only as part of a round trip with the ferry. I assume folks off cruise ships are the target market for the ferry/bus roundtrip. So if there's any doubt about the destination of the bus you're about to board, ask the driver.
