I'll be taking a classic ferry since premium ferries will not be running on Aug 21. I'm staying at an Air bnb in Aurland and would rather
not take a taxi trip to Flam if possible. Are the upper decks on the classic ferries usually pretty full? I'd like to stand against a rail for the ride as I have no plans of sitting or going inside. If I'm not likely to get such a spot after boarding in Aurland, I'll go to Flam and get in line. Any thoughts?
Can you buy your ticket in advance? If you know what time you want go, I believe you can go online and buy a ticket. We stayed at an Air bnb in Aurland and loved it. The boats do "fill", (we bought our tickets the day before when we were there in May, and were told that 2 of the afternoon ferries were sold out. I am not sure whether they were classic or premium boats). One thought is to take an early morning or a late afternoon ferry. When we were there, the cruise ships arrived too late and left too early for these departures. I don't think the premium ferries even stop at Aurland (at least they didn't when we were there.)
