Best way to visit Stave Churches in Norway

Hi! I need advice.

We are taking a Viking cruise of Norway and Iceland in August 2025. We want to arrive in Norway two days before the ship leaves from Bergen, visiting at least the stave church in Borgund. We have not booked flights yet.
SO--
If we fly into Oslo, can we drive to Bergen via Borgund in two days?
Is it easier to fly into Bergen and go to Borgund and back from there?
Without cramming in too much, can we visit two stave churches? Is there one close to Borgund?

Thanks in advance. We are so excited!

Less detour is Heddal stave church (my photo on Google Maps) which is also the largest stave church in Norway.

We couldn’t make it to the Borgund Stave church so we visited Oslo’s “ Norwegian Museum of Cultural History”. ( Norsk Folkemuseum) and saw the Gol Stave Church which was relocated here from Gol, Norway and restored.
The Gol Stave Church was built about the same time as the Borgund Stave Church— around 1150-1200.
You can see both the inside and outside of the Gol Stave Church. The Borgund Stave Church is sometimes open— and sometimes closed. So, be sure you know in advance whether you’ll be visiting during a time you can actually gain entrance to the church.

We are on that same cruise (on the 18th)! We plan to be in Oslo before as well and plan to visit the Gol Stave Church at the Folkenmuseum. I do see there's an opportunity in Flåm in the Villages of Norway Shore Excursion.
Happy Travels!

Tacking on to the previous posts - we visited Oslo's Folkenmuseum in summer 2023. They had a free walking tour that included the Gol Stave Church. Quite a nice presentation.

We were quite interested in seeing a stave church, but found transport to some of the other options more of a challenge than we wanted. The opportunity at the Folkenmuseum was a good substitute for not making it to a church at original location.

If you like living history musuems, you would probably find Oslo's enjoyable. We spent the entire day.

Because Oslo is such a modern city, there are not a lot of contiguous historical neighborhoods with old buildings still intact.

This is exactly why the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History is such a remarkable place. You can see architecture collected there that you’ll see nowhere else— even completely reassembled main streets of towns from a century ago.

Yes you can. Perhaps stay overnight in Lærdalsøyri

It would be cheaper as you'd deliver the car in the same spot, but the road trip from Oslo to Bergen would be more enjoyable.

On your way from Oslo you could stop at this one as well: https://maps.app.goo.gl/h7qf7GDnhqdr9cAM9

Palj,
We visited the stave church in Ringbu on my RS Scandinavia tour, a church built in 1210 and with a continuous congregation. The Pastor invited us in for coffee and cake. A wonderful experience! I bought a book in their small bookstore by a Norwegian author, Lars Mytting, The Bell in the Lake, an engrossing novel about the culture and folklore of rural Norway in the 1800’s. It’s the first in a trilogy.

I will be there in April/May. Have researched Stave Churches, among other sights. Here's a good web site with pictures and descriptions of all, plus a map with all of them marked: https://www.stavechurch.com/our-stave-churches/?lang=en

In the area not far from Borgund are also Urnes (Ornes) with animal carvings (looks VERY interesting), and Kaupanger, all pretty close to Laerdal. The huge Heddal Stave Church in Telemark county, closer to Oslo, looks amazing. I tried to paste the map here but this doesn't allow it. Check the website, it's got it all. Also look on Wikipedia under "Stave Church". GREAT information on their history, construction, styles, a list of all and a map with all locations.

Personally, I'd fly into Bergen, LOTS to see from there into the fjords, besides starting much closer to the Stave Churches you mention. Renting a car in Oslo and dropping off in Bergen is a big extra one-way fee. I know, as that's what we are doing, but we're in Norway for a whole month so will be doing a lot of wandering. Start close to your goal and have more time to see 2-3 churches and enjoy some beautiful scenery there, also. ENJOY!!
