Best Way to Detour From Nutshell Tour

We are looking to visit Norway June 2015. We'd love to do the Norway in a Nutshell with an extra day or two for some fjord area detours. What is the best way to visit Lustrafjord area, including Urnes Stave Church and the Jostedal's Nigard Glacier for a family friendly hike? We were thinking of staying in Balestrand. Is is even possible to do a Lustrafjord day trip from Balestrand?

Can't answer your question directly, but I just wanted to reinforce your idea of going to Balestrand as a detour from the Nutshell. I did that in September 2014. Beautiful place. Lots of things to do, or you can just sit and enjoy the grand Kviknes hotel. Hiking, renting bikes, walking along the fjord, etc. There are lots of ferry connections from Balestrand that can take you to other village sites.
