My husband and I would like to spend roughly a week beginning July 20th after we complete a cycling trip in Finland. We have been to Oslo and Bergen in the past, but weather was inclement and so we didn't get a chance to view the fjords. We will most likely fly into Oslo and rent a car (return the car in Oslo) for our journey. I am looking for suggestions on what would be the best route to travel to get the most 'bang for our buck'. The Geirrangerfjord & Naeroyfjord are on our list. Since we have the flexibility, we wanted to do more than what the NIN has to offer and we'd like to avoid the criuse ships. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Beth
A week is narrow from-to Oslo including "Geirrangerfjord & Naeroyfjord" if you want to include Bergen.
Consider including official scenic routes of Norway. Per day you will do max. 250-300 km. Read also getting around by car.
Avoid staying overnight in over-expensive Flåm and Geiranger.
As MarkK alluded to— Bergen, with its airport. makes a good entry point to drive 2 hours to the Naeroyfjord. Alesund, with its airport also is a good entry point for reaching the Geirangerfjord in 2.5 hours by car. You can then complete the loop to Alesund on Highway 63 and see the Trollstigen and Andalsnes. The route will take you along the shorelines of many fjords.
Have a great trip!
Thank you, we can easily change our plans to begin & end in Bergen. Are there certain train rides or ferry trips that are a must? Or will we experience enough by car?
I think you will experience enough by car. Meaningful are fjord cruises on ferries (also with car), e. g. Hellesylt - Geiranger to get the "full" experience. Of course you can do kayaking on fjords if you are more active.
