We'll be traveling to Norway in August.
We plan to take the NIN tour but we'd like to take some extra time in the Sognefjord area and spend a few nights rent a car and then continue on to Bergen.
I'd appreciate suggestions on what town to stay in and the best one day driving tours from that location.

I can't offer suggestions, as I am just getting ready for my own trip to Norway next month. I will be staying two nights in Balestrand (traveling by train and express boat) and renting a car for one day while I'm there just to explore the area.
But I did find a great site that has some recommended driving tours, so you might look at these, see which one(s) are most appealing to you, and then pick a base that is convenient for that drive.

About 2 years ago I rented a car in Bergen for several days and spent 2 nights in Solvorn at the Walaker Hotel, and then 2 nights at a hotel in Aurland. This gave me a great opportunity to explore the Jotenheim area and around the Sognefjord east of there. My advice would be to double the amount of time you think (or Google Maps thinks) to get from one area to another, easily, if not triple. You will wind up stopping frequently and taking in the view.
