We are planning on driving down from Lom on 55 (Sognefjellet) on June 9 to Flam. We would like to see Stegastein lookout. It looks like best route is ferry from Manheller to Fodnes, but which way is best to get to Stegastein from there?
Other questions are, should we pre-book the Manheller ferry or just drive on, and has anyone known route 55 to still be closed early June?

I think I found my answer in the RS guidebook for Scandinavia. Either way works, we have a choice of either going down the very narrow but scenic Snow Road, or taking the 15 mile tunnel to Aurland.
Not sure which we will go with.

We took FV243 at Lærdal. It's a beautiful drive over the old road. The other way is mostly through a tunnel.
That ferry route is part of 5. You will come out of a tunnel right before you get to the ferry line. Just drive on when it's your turn. It's easy.

Just as heads-up: there is a tourist ferry transporting also cars from Kaupanger to Gudvangen - very scenic through Nærøyfjord. Here reservation would be needed.
Unfortunately, the Kaupanger to Gudvangen ferry is not open until June 21 this year.
