It looks like you are taking the train from Oslo to Bergen and returning by ferry and train.
There isn't anything in Flam except a train station. One night is plenty in Balestrand. I would add a night to Oslo and to Bergen. The Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand is exspensive but really cool.

Just a thought about the return to Oslo...What if you reversed the Balestrand and Bergen visits and flew home via Bergen (with connection in Oslo)? That would give you more time in the cities vs. in-transit.

I think two nights in Balestrand is great if you want to explore the area. I stayed there two nights, rented a car, and drove a spectacular route filled with stunning scenery, and I stopped to do a few short hikes. There is also a great network of hiking trails in and around Balestrand. I also stayed at the Balestrand Hotel, and I highly recommend it. I had a fjord-view room, and I spent both evenings out there with a glass of wine just enjoying life!
It is true that Flam is not much more than a transportation hub, but there are some good hiking trails, and it's in a beautiful setting.
I think your itinerary is just fine as is.
