My wife and I will be visiting Norway for the first time in a few short weeks. We'll be taking the train from Oslo to Bergen and staying down on the wharf. What is the best way to get from the station to our hotel? Is it walkable, or should we get some sort of transportation? What sorts of public transportation are available? Thanks all for the advice!
Last time I was in Bergen I had the same problem. I hadn't planned how to get from the station to our hotel just south of the wharf and assumed there would be taxis, at the very least, outside the station. There weren't any! We ended up walking a block or two to a hotel and getting a cab from there. It's too far to walk to the wharf. There is probably an easier way (Uber or something like it perhaps?) but that's what we did. Not ideal. I'm sure someone else will have a better idea.
For arrival at Bergen train station, Rick Steves Scandinavia says: Taxis wait to the right (with the tracks at your back); a tram stop is to your left, just around the corner. From the train station, it’s a 10-minute walk to the TI: Cross the street (Strømgaten) in front of the station and take Marken, a cobbled street that eventually turns into a modern retail street. Continue walking in the same direction until you reach the water. The tram doesn't go all the way to the harbor, so I think it doesn't gain you much. Taxi phone numbers are 07000 or 08000.
Thanks so much!
