Bergen to Trondheim by train

We are looking into taking the train from Bergen to Trondheim in April. I’ve had a hard time finding information.

You are way too early trying to book that. Try again in a few months.

You can see the route and connections on Bahn.de.

It is a very long journey of 14-15 hours as you have to return to Oslo to connect to the train up to Trondheim. Most of the trains are night trains and you miss much of the scenery doing this in April. The one daytime route departs Bergen at 7:54 am and (finally) arrives in Trondheim at 22:08.

The schedule may change before your trip but it is always going to be a long journey. If you were going in summer, I would definitely suggest you rent a car and drive, going up the coast partway (as far as Alesund) and then heading more inland to include a decent of the Trollstigen:

But that won’t work in April. Maybe consider flying?

What information are you looking for? If you want an idea of routes and prices, you could just use the VY site https://www.vy.no/en/ and check for dates in the near future. Their website indicates tickets are released 90 days before departure.

It would be an extremely long train trip. Basically, you’d be traveling from Bergen to Oslo and then transfering in Oslo on a train to Trondheim. Are you sure you want to spend 15 hours on the train? There are nonstop flights on SAS that take an hour.

Yes it would be a long trip. Exactly how long depends on how well the trains schedules work together, but you will most likely travel via Oslo. The scenery however will be amazing. There are night trains as well, both Bergen-Oslo and Oslo-Trondheim, but then you will miss the scenery.

For a slightly faster trip, the Norwegian coach company Nor-way normally have direct buses between Bergen and Trondheim. That will give you a faster trip but still great scenery. www.nor-way.no/

Or if you want to save a bit of time by travelling overnight, Hurtigruten is an option. They depart Bergen 20:30 and arrive in Trondheim the next day 09:45. Will also give you great views as you sail along the coast. www.hurtigruten.no

And as mentioned there are direct flights as well. www.flysas.com
