I did a search and it sounds like Bergen to Flam drive time is about 2.5 - 3 hours. We plan on driving the fastest route, E 16, instead of the scenic route because we need to meet up with a tour. If leaving Bergen at 10 am we can easily make it to Gudvangen and our boat can pick us up there but I really wanted to make it to Flam and take the full boat ride. Is there a possibility we could make it to Flam by 12:10?
It's not easy for me to be up and on the road early of my own volition. But Rick would certainly encourage you to be, to get the most out of your precious sightseeing day.
I wish it was that simple. Our 14 night cruise only visits two Norway ports; Bergen and Alesund. After reading up I think I have a plan for an abbreviated nin: Have a taxi pick us up at the ship in Bergen at 10:00. Drive us to Gudvangen where the RIB tour boat will pick us up for the 2nd half of the rib tour, returning us to Flåm in time for a 14:50 train from Flåm back to Bergen. Train arrives in Bergen with a couple hours to see the city before we board ship for Alesund.
If we were able to make it to Flåm by 12:10 we would be able to take the full rib tour instead of just half a tour with pick up in Gudvangen.
With a drop off in Gudvangen and half a rib tour at 13:15 however will give us time for some scenic picture stops so it may work better. Public transportation won't work for our port times getting to Flåm or Gudvangen.
All in all it's about a $700 day for two people for this diy option, about the same as the ship tour but the ship tour omits a fjord boat ride and gets back to Bergen just prior to the ship sailing at 20:00 so no ability to see Bergen.
I'm still a little unsure if this is a worthwhile port plan but I really want to see some of the countryside, fjords and Flåm railway and this is the only opportunity.
If something went wrong along the way and we missed the ship we can catch up with it the following day in Alesund.
Due to the expense I want it to be an enjoyable day and hope I'm not setting ourselves up for a day we regret.
