We will arrive in Bergen September 5 at the beginning of a 2 week trip to Scandinavia. We had planned to use trains, buses and boats to get around but some health issues will making carrying luggage around difficult so I think we will rent a car. Is it reasonable to drive from Bergen to Flåm and from there, taking the Flåm-Gudvangen fjord tour (round trip), the flamsbana train (round trip) and then drive to Oslo. The Flåm part would be over 2 days.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Totally doable as it’s just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Bergen to Flam mostly on highway E16. For the Flam to Oslo section, you could stop at Borgund to see Norway’s oldest Stave Church built in 1180 which is on the 6-hour direct driving route. Try rental car consolidator at www.AutoEurope.com for the best rates on car rentals. You’ll want to do this ASAP along with checking on the availability of Flamsbana train tickets on your preferred dates.
Have a great trip!
It certainly can be done, as long as you spend a night or to in Flåm. I would not recommend doing it in a single day.
I don't know what kind of health issues you have, but don't overestimate the trouble of train travel. It is one change required in Myrdal which is a small station.
Should you decide to drive, make sure you learn all the road signs and the rules of the road. Norwegian traffic tickets are no joke.
